(US, 26th) US Secretary of State Rubio had a phone call with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Thursday (December 25), emphasizing that the United States is willing to facilitate dialogue between Cambodia and Thailand to ensure peace and stability between the two countries.
According to Bloomberg, the US State Department released a brief statement saying that during the call, Rubio reiterated President Trump’s hope for Cambodia and Thailand to fully implement the peace agreement signed earlier this year.
On the 12th, Trump spoke on the phone with leaders of both Cambodia and Thailand, and afterwards stated that the two leaders agreed to a ceasefire starting that evening. However, the Thai side denied this the next day. The conflict on the Thai-Cambodian border continues. At his year-end press conference last week, Rubio said the US side is "cautiously optimistic" that Thailand and Cambodia could begin a ceasefire on Monday (22nd) or Tuesday (23rd).
From Wednesday (24th) to Friday (26th), Cambodia and Thailand held a Joint Border Affairs Committee meeting in Chanthaburi Province, Thailand. This was the first dialogue since clashes broke out again on the 7th.
The latest clashes on the Thai-Cambodian border have resulted in at least 44 deaths and over 500,000 civilians displaced.
