In the third retreat of the Malaysian government cabinet, Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming, presented 12 annual plans aimed at benefiting the general public through housing protection legislation and the completion of livelihood projects.
After attending the Malaysian government's third cabinet retreat, Nga Kor Ming stated that each cabinet minister is required to present the department's annual plans, not only to keep the Prime Minister and cabinet members informed but also to communicate with the public, demonstrating the current government's transparency in governance.
He said that to increase the national homeownership rate and realize the vision of "a house for everyone," 5 out of the 12 annual plans are related to housing. These include completing 500,000 affordable homes under the 12th Malaysia Plan (2021-2025), the construction of 5,500 Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) by the National Housing Corporation (SPNB) under the Ministry of Housing, the repair and reconstruction of 5,000 dilapidated houses, the construction of Malaysia Madani PR1MA city, and the implementation of 358 public housing renovation projects, which include the replacement of old elevators, electrical wiring, painting, etc.
"Last year, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government completed 466,421 affordable homes under the 12th Malaysia Plan (2021-2025), and the National Housing Corporation also exceeded its target for Rumah Mesra Rakyat. Therefore, the Ministry will continue to push forward this year."
He stated in a press release on Sunday that the Ministry successfully closed 2,634 illegal dumping sites and completed 6,611 livelihood projects, as well as completed 102 Malaysia Madani public parks in 2024.
"This year, the Ministry is determined to reach new heights, with goals to complete 6,000 livelihood projects, close 3,000 illegal dumping sites, and construct 100 Malaysia Madani public community parks."
Nga Kor Ming further stated that to protect the rights of the people, the Ministry will also legislate amendments to the Fire Services Act, the Community Services Act, and the Urban Renewal Act this year.
Additionally, he mentioned that the Ministry will implement the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the circular economy, ensure that the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department serves as an Industry Leading Body (ILB). The Ministry will also be vying for the chair position of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme this year.
