(Miri, 18th) Sarawak Pakatan Harapan and DAP Secretary Alan Ling Sie Kiong expressed strong support and appreciation for the recent announcement by the Federal Government of Malaysia to allocate funds to independent Chinese secondary schools (independent schools).
He stated that this decision reflects the government's emphasis on our country's multicultural education system and shows a proactive attitude in continuing to provide economic support for the development of independent schools.
“As an essential part of the national education system, independent schools play a critical role in cultivating talent. Therefore, the government's initiative to provide financial support helps independent schools continuously improve their educational standards and nurture more outstanding talents with multilingual and multicultural qualities for the nation.”
He noted that since the Pakatan Harapan took office in 2018, the country's political situation has ushered in a significant turning point. Under Pakatan Harapan's leadership at that time, the government innovatively allocated funds to support independent school education, marking a move towards a more inclusive and diversified direction for our country's educational policies.
He further stated that it is noteworthy that since the change of government in 2018, the first allocation of funds in 2019 amounted to 12 million Malaysian Ringgit, increasing to 15 million in 2020, 15.75 million in 2023, and 18.9 million in 2024. This year it has exceeded 20 million.
The continuous increase in the allocation of funds for independent schools reflects the government's acknowledgment and support of the contributions of independent school education.
He lamented that unfortunately there were two years of interrupted allocations, precisely due to politicians and political parties with ulterior motives who disrupted the government at the time.
“Before Pakatan Harapan came to power, who would dare expect institutionalized funding for independent schools? At least before the change of political parties, the previous government did not achieve this.”
Alan Ling urged the Unity Government led by Prime Minister Anwar to continue adhering to this open and inclusive education policy to further promote educational equality and the common prosperity of cultural development among different ethnic groups in the country.
