(Kuching, 11th) The Sarawak government has launched the Sarawak Basic Living Assistance Scheme (SKAS) 2026, aimed at alleviating the financial burden faced by beneficiary families.
According to the 2026 Phase 1 database of those receiving Compassionate Cash Assistance, a total of 857,814 beneficiaries throughout Sarawak have been identified as eligible for this assistance.
Deputy State Secretary Dato Sri Abdullah Said stated that this program reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to assist those in need.
He said: "The SKAS scheme is part of the Sarawak government's broader assistance measures, ensuring that aid truly reaches those who need it most."
He made this statement via a press release on Monday (March 9).
Abdullah Said stated that SKAS assistance will be distributed in three stages in 2026.
He said that the first phase of the assistance will begin distribution on March 10, involving an allocation of RM179.6 million.
He added that the second phase, initially scheduled earlier, has been rescheduled to be distributed on May 15.
"The second phase also involves an allocation of RM179.6 million to ensure continued assistance for eligible recipients throughout the year."
As for the final phase of assistance, it is expected to be distributed on November 10, with a slightly higher allocation of RM180.6 million.
Abdullah Said pointed out that the phased distribution of assistance is intended to provide ongoing support for families to meet daily expenses and basic living needs.
He said that this program demonstrates the Sarawak government's proactive response to the rising cost of living faced by many families.
"Through programs like SKAS, the government hopes to strengthen the social support system and ensure that the people can continuously receive the necessary assistance."
He added that the program complements the state government’s existing measures to enhance the well-being and socio-economic stability of Sarawak communities.
"The Sarawak government hopes that this program can continuously help families cope with rising living costs, while ensuring that those in need can afford basic necessities."
He said that the authorities will continue to monitor the implementation process to ensure the assistance is distributed effectively and benefits all eligible recipients throughout Sarawak.
