(Kuching, 11th) Whether the SUPP will continue to field all its incumbent assemblymen in the upcoming Sarawak state election will ultimately be decided by party president Sim Kui Hian.
The party’s deputy secretary-general, Lo Khere Chiang, said the party leadership will carefully discuss the list of candidates before making a final decision, and will contest the state election under the Sarawak Parties Alliance (GPS) banner.
He explained that although the party will assess the performance and suitability of its current elected representatives, the final decision will be made by party president Sim Kui Hian in consultation with the top leadership of the alliance.
He said, "Whether to retain all the incumbent assemblymen will be decided by the party president." He made these remarks when speaking about preparations for the next state election.
As the state assemblyman for Batu Kitang, Lo Khere Chiang pointed out that candidate selection is not just an internal party matter, but also involves discussions among GPS leaders.
He said the decision will also be coordinated with the GPS Supreme Council led by Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He stated that the alliance’s leadership will comprehensively assess various factors, including the candidates’ performance, grassroots support, and continued ability to serve the people effectively.
"The party president will work with the GPS top leadership to choose the most suitable candidates to represent the alliance in the upcoming election."
Lo Khere Chiang emphasized that GPS places great importance on candidate selection to ensure they can maintain public trust and continue to bring development to the people of Sarawak.
Currently, SUPP holds 13 seats in the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly.
Besides Lo Khere Chiang and Sim Kui Hian (Batu Kawa), other incumbents include: Billy Sujang (Opar), Yii Yaw Soon (Kota Sentosa), Francis Harden Hollis (Simanggang), Wong Ching King (Repok), Tiong King Sing (Meradong), Chieng Jin Ek (Bukit Assek), Ching Ming Chee (Pelawan), Pang Leong Ming (Tanjong Batu), Chen Chao Yao (Piasau), Yii Siew San (Pujut), and Lee Kim Shin (Senadin).
These assemblymen were elected in the 2021 Sarawak state election, when SUPP won 13 seats—a significant increase from the previous 7 seats.
