(Miri, 13th) The Welfare, Health & Community Sub-Committee of the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri Branch, along with the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), visited Kampung Masjid Kuala Baram on January 11 (Saturday) to visit two families from impoverished backgrounds, conducting a charitable activity full of care and educational significance.
The Chairperson of the Welfare Sub-Committee, Dr. Uma Devi, delivered a lecture for the family members present, covering topics such as the dangers of plastic, the importance of cleanliness, and healthy eating.
Following this, the volunteer team further conducted topical education. Aaron Ismanto provided a safety briefing on drinking water storage; Dr. Lau Lih Kai gave a hygiene briefing; and Mohd Shobri introduced services provided by the Miri City Council and ways to report related issues.
To further emphasize the dangers of plastic containers, the team distributed stainless steel food containers to the two families. These containers were generously donated by anonymous donors, to whom the MRC Miri Branch extends its sincere thanks. Additionally, the team brought dry food, clothing, and other necessities, with volunteers donating extra food, soap, and other daily items.
During the visit, villagers expressed deep concern about the threat of crocodiles. It is reported that crocodiles frequently appear at the bottom of houses, sometimes even climbing to the staircase entrance, posing a threat to residents and their pets. This situation particularly worries villagers when water reaches the entrance of their homes, as crocodile activity increases at night, and pets such as dogs have often been attacked or devoured, causing villagers significant anxiety.
Such community care activities will be held regularly, and the MRC Miri Branch hopes more volunteers will join and work together to create a better community environment.
