(Kuching, 13th) Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that Sarawak is exploring collaborations with international aerospace companies and research institutions to promote knowledge and technology exchange, while fostering innovation to achieve economic diversification within the state.

He believes that these collaborations will create high-value jobs in design, engineering, and production, helping to attract and retain top talents.

“While oil and gas remain important, we will focus on high-value industries such as biotechnology, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing, which align with global trends and leverage cutting-edge technologies to enhance our competitiveness.”

He admitted that the aerospace industry, in particular, has great growth potential. With the increasing demand for satellites, drones, and aerospace components, Sarawak can leverage its strategic location and growing infrastructure to position itself as a hub for advanced manufacturing and innovation.

The Premier said this during his speech today at the 2025 Sarawak Premier event at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

He mentioned that he has launched an aerospace academy at the Sarawak Centre of Technical Excellence in Lundu, aimed at providing professional skills in aerospace engineering, drone technology, satellite manufacturing, and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services for the state's workforce.

He said this bold initiative demonstrates the state's commitment to achieving excellence in the aerospace sector.

“Collaboration is key. We are working with universities, industry leaders, and experts to develop tailored training programs for high-value industries such as advanced manufacturing, digital technology, and renewable energy. These partnerships will ensure that our workforce remains agile and well-prepared for the emerging demands of these key industries.”

He noted that complementing these efforts is the development of a comprehensive Industry 4.0 ecosystem, integrating advanced technologies across various sectors, and establishing new industrial zones under the 13th Malaysia Plan for high-tech projects such as semiconductors, lithium batteries, data centers, and green energy.

He said that financing and incentives for R&D will be strengthened, and collaboration with global research institutions will be encouraged to foster innovation and technological advancement.

“At the core of this transformation is the commitment to build an integrated supply chain ecosystem and promote digitization to enhance competitiveness. The regulatory framework is being streamlined to improve ease of doing business, with substantial investment made in workforce training and skills enhancement. There are also plans to build free industrial zones in conjunction with port development and establish centers for aerospace and space industries.”

Abang Johari said that Sarawak also recognizes that the mining industry remains a cornerstone of its economic strategy, and his government aims to unlock its full potential by advancing upstream and downstream industries to create greater value.

“We will continue to commit to sustainable mining. Last June, Sarawak went on a technological study tour to Canada to better understand the mining ecosystem and adopt best practices in legal frameworks, new technologies, and community engagement.”

Additionally, he said Sarawak is also focused on rehabilitating and protecting old mining sites to integrate sustainable practices into the industry. These efforts underscore our determination to balance economic growth with environmental management and inclusivity.”
