(Kuching, Jan 13) Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari pointed out that to strengthen the field of higher education, Sarawakian students entering universities owned by the Sarawak government can choose their majors based on personal interest.

He stated that this initiative aims to ensure students can pursue their interests without any interference in deciding their major fields.

“In any university owned by Sarawak, we not only rely on the university admissions center. What do students want to learn? Want to study aeronautics? Then come on in. Want to study economics? You can enroll in an economics major. Want to become a pilot? You are welcome to join.”

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari mentioned during the 8th Anniversary Town Hall Meeting of the 2025 Sarawak Premier held yesterday that this move can not only ensure that students can study the majors they are interested in but also help reduce the unemployment rate in Sarawak.

He stated that this measure is closely related to the Sarawak government's desire to introduce strategic employment opportunities such as aerospace, satellite economy, and data centers.

He said it clearly shows that Sarawak urgently needs to cultivate technical talent through a new education system.

“If we want to achieve goals like aerospace, satellite economy, and data centers, we must have enough human resources, as these are crucial disciplines. This is why science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are very important, and finance and law are also indispensable. As the situation changes, we need to bring in Sarawakians to fill these strategic specialties.”
