(Miri, 14th) Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin stated that with more airlines establishing routes between Peninsula Malaysia and Sarawak, not only will travel convenience be enhanced, but new pathways for economic growth will also be established, especially in Miri, which is renowned as a tourist city and industrial activity center.
He mentioned that, as of today, Miri has three airlines flying directly to Miri from Kuala Lumpur, namely Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air. This is undoubtedly an honor for us Mirians.
Lee Kim Shin made these remarks at a press conference during the inaugural ceremony of Batik Air's Kuala Lumpur-Miri flight.
He pointed out that Sarawak's domestic flight network continues to thrive, with 420 flights per week connecting Peninsula Malaysia and Sabah to various destinations in Sarawak. These include Kuching (211 flights), Sibu (60 flights), Bintulu (37 flights), Miri (100 flights), Limbang (3 flights), Lawas (2 flights), and Mulu (7 flights).
"The frequency of flights from Kuala Lumpur to Miri has significantly increased from 41 flights per week to 55 flights per week, highlighting the growing demand for this route. Data shows that the average load factor of the Kuala Lumpur to Miri flights is as high as 90%."
He also stated that since the establishment of the Sarawak Ministry of Transport, they have been collaborating with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad and the Ministry of Transport Malaysia to upgrade Miri Airport. In 2019, the airport accommodated nearly 2.5 million passengers, exceeding its capacity, underscoring the need for expansion to meet current and future demands.
"The expansion plan will include new terminal extensions and upgrades to the Rural Air Service (RAS) area, as well as additional check-in counters, new office spaces, updated signage and route guidance, a new baggage handling system, improved departure lounges, and additional passenger boarding bridges."
He also mentioned that as a hybrid model airline combining low cost and quality service, Batik Air offers attractive fare promotions. I encourage travelers to plan and book in advance to take advantage of these special offers, ensuring ticket prices remain within a reasonable budget while enjoying quality service.
