Cristiano Ronaldo: This Is My Last World Cup

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo (CR7) confirmed on the 5th that the ongoing USA-Canada-Mexico World Cup will be his last World Cup.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Ronaldo said at the pre-match press conference ahead of Portugal's Round of 16 match against Spain: "I want to fully enjoy this World Cup because it is my last World Cup."

"But I hope tomorrow will not be my last World Cup match."

Portugal will face tournament favorite Spain on the 6th local time. The 41-year-old Ronaldo has already scored three goals in this World Cup. Since 2006, he has netted 11 goals across six consecutive World Cups, becoming the first player in history to score in six World Cups.

At the press conference, Ronaldo was repeatedly questioned about his retirement from various angles. Ronaldo said: "When my career ends, it will be up to me to decide. Whether or not I’m still playing, I will continue to play an important role for the Portugal team."

To date, Ronaldo has played 232 matches and scored 146 goals for Portugal, making him the team's all-time best scorer. In 2016, he helped Portugal win the European Championship—the team's first major tournament title in history.

"That day (retirement) will come eventually, but Cristiano will walk away with a clear conscience—not 100%, but 1000%. Because I have given everything to football. I play purely out of love," he said.

Speaking emotionally about his experience at this World Cup, Ronaldo said: "It's been wonderful, not just on the field. This will be the most memorable World Cup for me because the enthusiasm from the people has been even stronger. I don't know why. This is the most emotional World Cup for me."
