Report: US and Iran Agree to Stop Mutual Attacks and Resume Dialogue

(US, 29th) US media reports that Iran and the US have agreed to cease recent hostile actions in the Persian Gulf region and will resume talks regarding the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz.

US news site Axios quoted a senior US official on Sunday (June 28) as saying that both sides plan to meet in Qatar on Tuesday (the 30th).

Since Iran struck a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz with a missile on June 25, both sides have engaged in days of mutual attacks and counterattacks. Both the US and Iran accused each other of violating the temporary ceasefire agreement reached on June 17. Afterwards, both sides resumed diplomatic mediation.

Early Sunday morning, Iran launched missiles and drones at US military bases located in Kuwait and Bahrain. Prior to the Axios news report, US President Trump had threatened that if Iran did not comply with the agreement to end the war, he would eliminate the Iranian leadership.

He said on social media: "Perhaps one day, we will no longer be able to remain rational and will be forced to use military means to complete the work we have started. Once this happens, Iran will cease to exist!"

Iran had previously canceled a scheduled meeting with the US on Sunday. An Iranian official told national television this was due to recent attacks on Iran and because some terms of the memorandum of understanding had not yet been fulfilled.

Official Fazaeli said: "For example, one of the reasons is to verify whether we can retrieve our frozen funds, and if not, it means the terms have not yet been fulfilled."
