(Israel, 29th) Israeli Prime Minister and Defense Minister issued a joint statement saying that the Israeli military destroyed an underground facility used by Hezbollah in a village in southern Lebanon.
According to Reuters, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz said in a statement on Sunday (June 28) that the United States was notified in advance of this attack. The target was a tunnel about 200 meters long located in the town of Majdal Zoun, which was said to contain hundreds of weapons and launchers.
This attack took place two days after Lebanon and Israel reached a US-brokered security agreement. Under the agreement, Israeli forces would withdraw in phases from parts of southern Lebanon, while Lebanese troops would be deployed to those areas. However, Israeli forces would still be allowed to remain in the expanded security zone.
Hezbollah said earlier on Monday (29th) that Israel's attack was a "blatant" violation of the ceasefire agreement, adding that Hezbollah is closely monitoring all violations and reserves the right to "defend the homeland and the people."
Hezbollah leader Qassem rejected the security agreement, calling it a surrender to Israel and stressing that Hezbollah would continue armed resistance.
In his statement Sunday evening, Netanyahu said the Israeli military would continue to be stationed in the security zone in southern Lebanon and would "continue to destroy terrorist infrastructure, eliminate threats to northern communities, and ensure the safety of Israeli citizens."
