China's top producer Yu Zheng is known for his outspokenness. In the past, he had a falling out with Ruby Lin over “Beauty’s Schemes” (“美人心计”), which led to more than a decade of no interaction between the two. Unexpectedly, he recently responded directly for the first time on a show due to a question from Joe Chen. He not only recalled details of the argument but also generously admitted that the two have long since let bygones be bygones.
Back in 2009, “Beauty’s Schemes” was a hit, with Ruby Lin’s portrayal of “Dou Yifang” boosting her popularity, and she and producer Yu Zheng were seen as the “perfect team.” However, good times didn’t last long. In 2011, Ruby Lin established her own studio and starred in and produced “The Glamorous Imperial Concubine” (“倾世皇妃”), bringing on board part of the behind-the-scenes team from “Beauty’s Schemes,” including styling and makeup artists.
Yu Zheng admitted that at the time he felt his “team was poached,” and in his younger, more impulsive days, he was very unhappy about it. He even publicly posted online, sarcastically referring to Ruby Lin as “an outdated star who’d made a comeback but was now ungrateful,” and used the analogy of “spicy hotpot” to describe how she seemed gentle on the outside but was actually very assertive inside. Ruby Lin immediately fired back, and the two ended up harboring resentment, barely interacting for over 10 years.
Years later, with the massive success of “Story of Yanxi Palace,” Ruby Lin took the initiative to contact Yu Zheng via a friend’s phone, drinking together and enthusiastically praising, “This drama is so good!” She even extended an olive branch, saying, “Let’s collaborate again next time!” Yu Zheng also acknowledged that he was indeed “too young and too rash” back then, and now appreciates Ruby Lin’s achievements as both a producer and an actress.
