(Selangau, 18th) — Yesterday (November 17), a bold attempt to smuggle goods worth over RM830,000 into Sarawak was foiled in Selangau, as soldiers intercepted and detained four men.
During an “Ops Keris Parang” surveillance operation, members of the 11th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment spotted four lorries driving from the Malaysia-Indonesia border along an unregistered route towards a nearby village at around 5:45 pm.
The Eastern Field Army Command stated that the swift interception led to the arrest of one Malaysian man and three Indonesian men.
The command said: “Further inspection found 21,600 boxes of Gudang Gading brand cigarettes with a market value of about RM648,000, as well as 900 sacks of onions valued at about RM31,500. Meanwhile, the total value of the four lorries involved is estimated at RM153,000. The total value of all confiscated goods amounts to RM832,500.”
The suspects and seized items have been handed over to the Selangau District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further investigation.
Police said this operation effectively blocked another illegal channel used by smuggling syndicates along Sarawak's land border.
Police emphasized that the ongoing vigilance of troops and close cooperation between law enforcement agencies were key to the operation’s success.
