KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Sarawak Science Centre will be officially opened on Jul 29 by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, marking a key milestone in the state’s efforts to promote science awareness and innovation among the public.

Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the centre is expected to serve as a platform to inspire interest in science, particularly among the younger generation.

He encouraged the public to visit the facility with their families and friends to better understand the role of science and its benefits to society.

“I hope you will also visit the Science Centre, not just by yourselves, but bring your families and friends, especially the younger generation.

“This is so that they will be able to see what science is all about and what we can do for the good of our people,” he said during a press conference for Sarawak SHInE International Conference 2026, at the Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute here today.

Meanwhile, he highlighted ongoing efforts to achieve a rabies-free Sarawak through close collaboration between the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC), local councils and the Department of Veterinary Services.

He said the state is also aiming for a broader goal of a rabies-free Borneo, noting that cross-border animal movement remains a challenge.

As part of new initiatives, Sagah said authorities are exploring community participation through volunteer-based programmes, including the distribution of baited food to help detect rabies among animals.

He added that vaccination programmes are being carried out aggressively across several areas, including Kuching, Serian and Bau, and urged the public to stay updated with local councils on these efforts.

Sagah said public cooperation remains crucial in ensuring the success of both vaccination drives and disease detection measures.
