KOTA SAMARAHAN: Sarawak will strengthen its position as a regional research and innovation hub with the Sarawak SHInE International Conference 2026 from Sept 9 to 11 at the Imperial Hotel Kuching.

Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the three-day conference is expected to gather over 300 participants, including more than 30 expert speakers from Malaysia and abroad, in a multidisciplinary platform aimed at addressing pressing challenges in science, health and technology.

He said the conference, themed ‘Advancing Science, Health, Innovation and Engineering’, will bring together researchers, industry players, policymakers and international partners to exchange ideas and foster collaboration.

“SHInE 2026 is part of our ongoing effort to make Sarawak a hub where research, innovation and practical solutions come together,” he said during a press conference for the event held at the Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute here today.

Organised by the Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC) and the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC), the conference reflects the state’s commitment to advance research excellence and translating innovation into tangible outcomes.

Sagah said the event will feature over 30 sessions, including keynote addresses and panel discussions focusing on scaling innovation impact and accelerating sustainable technologies for climate-resilient development in Sarawak.

International participation will include speakers from the United Kingdom, Australia, Cambodia, Singapore and Taiwan, underscoring the conference’s global reach.

Among the confirmed speakers are Dr. Angelia Liew San Chuin (Department of the Premier of Sarawak), Prof. Tuck Seng Wong (UKSEA Vax Hub), Prof. Peter Eastwood (Murdoch University) and Datuk Prof. Dr Norlida Buniyamin (National Measurement Council).

In addition to academic and industry discourse, participants will have opportunities to attend exhibitions, technical visits to the Sarawak Science Centre and the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre, as well as tech talks and product showcases.

Sagah added that engaging youth remains a key priority, with initiatives such as the SRDC BrightSparX Programme aimed at nurturing future innovators.

The conference will also feature the Premier’s BrightSparX Innovation Award to recognise outstanding ideas from young participants.

He noted that support from international partners, including Asia PGI and the UKSEA Vax Hub, will further enhance collaboration and knowledge-sharing opportunities.

“We want to create opportunities for collaboration, spark new ideas and build connections that lead to real impact,” he said.
