UNIMAS Teaching Hospital Visits Remote Kapit Community to Provide Free Health Checks

(Kapit, 19th) — The Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Teaching Hospital (HPUNIMAS) continues to promote community health initiatives, having recently held the “HPUNIMAS x MCS Baleh MediReach” community health program at Rumah Dapong longhouse, Nanga Entawau, Baleh.
This community outreach event, held from May 15 to 17, benefited more than 203 local residents.
According to a statement by HPUNIMAS, the program aims to provide accessible medical services to residents of the interior areas of Kapit, with the participation of 45 volunteers including several hospital top management members.

Participants included Datuk Prof Mohd Fadzil Abd Rahman, Consultant at HPUNIMAS, Prof Irfa’ Bujang Safawi, Dean, as well as Honorary Prof Balbir Singh Mohan Singh, former Director of the UNIMAS Malaria Research Centre.
The statement noted that during the activity on May 16 from 9am to 4pm, local residents received a range of free medical services.
“Services provided included general health screening and Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment, blood sugar and cholesterol tests, specialist consultations and pharmacy services, as well as free distribution of reading glasses.”
Additionally, the volunteer team visited SMK Baleh to conduct student health awareness activities.

The hospital stated that the event included a health knowledge sharing session by Prof Balbir Singh, as well as basic first aid demonstrations conducted by medical assistants and nurses, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid for choking.
To execute the program, the volunteer team departed from the UNIMAS Teaching Hospital’s Primary Care Centre in Kota Samarahan on May 15, embarking on an 8-hour journey to Kapit.
“The highlight of the event took place on May 16, 2026, at Rumah Dapong longhouse in Nanga Entawau, which also served as the one-stop center for the community health activities,” stated the hospital.
