19-Year-Old Denies Fatal Hit-and-Run Charge

(Kuching, 6th) A 19-year-old youth was charged in the Magistrate's Court today, suspected of dangerous driving and hitting a cyclist resulting in death at Sedudong Road in the early morning of May 1.
The accused pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali after hearing the charges.
The charge stated that the accused was driving a Proton Satria car and was dangerously driving on a straight road, hitting a 56-year-old cyclist and causing the latter's death.
The case is charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and will be penalized under the same Act.
If convicted, the accused may be sentenced to imprisonment for not less than 5 years and not more than 10 years, and fined between RM20,000 and RM50,000, with the driving license suspended for at least 5 years.
The charge stated that the incident happened around 5:30 am on May 1 at Sedudong Road.

The court subsequently allowed the accused to be released on cash bail of RM20,000, with two local sureties.
The Magistrate also set June 23 for case mention and management.
The accused was instructed to report to the Simpang Tiga Traffic Police Station every month.
The accused was represented in court by lawyer Daniel Ling.
Previous media reports stated that the hit-and-run incident resulted in the death of a cyclist on the morning of May 1.
Police preliminary investigation showed that the deceased was suspected to have been hit from behind by a vehicle while cycling towards Saradise.
According to the deceased's friend, they had planned to cycle together after having breakfast at Saradise.
Medical personnel later confirmed that the deceased succumbed to severe injuries.
After three days of continuous police investigation, the accused eventually surrendered to the Kuching Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at noon on May 5.
