(Miri, 9th) In recent years, the Sarawak Party Alliance government has been diligently following a development path led by advanced technologies and green energy, in alignment with developed countries worldwide, to promote Sarawak's economic transformation. This is the right path, but the prerequisite is the enhancement of Sarawak's education quality, and free university education is a necessary policy to strengthen talent reserves.
Sean Huang, the organizational secretary of Sarawak United People's Party N74 Pujut branch and city councilor, made this statement in a press release today. He said that Sarawak has long relied on resources such as oil, natural gas, and forestry to finance development. However, these are ultimately depletable resources, whereas developing the technology industry is a sustainable and highly profitable sector; therefore, it is vital to seize the opportunity, attract foreign investments, and enhance Sarawak's economic capacity.
"Today, a highly skilled workforce is crucial for attracting foreign investment. Only by popularizing higher education can Sarawak enhance competitiveness in fields such as manufacturing and the digital industry. Investing in human resources will lead to sustainable development."
He stated that according to the MA63 founding agreement, Sarawak enjoys higher autonomy within Malaysia. Implementing free higher education demonstrates Sarawak Alliance's capability of independent decision-making and highlights a significant step towards reclaiming autonomy from the federation.
Huang made these comments regarding Sarawak Premier Abang Johari's recent revelation in Miri that the Sarawak government is prepared to allocate RM700 million annually to subsidize free higher education. He noted that for a long time, compared to West Malaysia, Sarawak has a vast area with a sparse population, especially in rural areas that are generally underdeveloped with insufficient educational resources, leading to lower education levels and weaker competitiveness among rural residents. The Sarawak government's free higher education policy aims to enhance the educational level of all ethnic groups, reduce unemployment rates, narrow the wealth gap, promote social cohesion, and reduce development disparities.
He praised the Sarawak Alliance's determination to promote economic transformation towards high-tech fields. The Sarawak government's commitment to carbon neutrality and efforts to develop green energy, including investments in renewable energy, have further elevated Sarawak's international image. This series of policies has garnered attention from countries such as Europe, America, and Australia. In recent years, it has become common for leaders and business representatives from advanced nations to visit Sarawak expressing their investment interests, a rare occurrence in the past 30 years, indicating that Sarawak Alliance is on the right path.
He said that the Sarawak Alliance's investment of oil and gas resource wealth into higher education is the greatest "feedback" for the people of Sarawak, ensuring fair distribution of these resources and benefiting long-term development. The people of Sarawak are also pleased to see the government investing in education to cultivate more science and technology talents, technical elites, and leaders with foresight to seize the tremendous opportunities presented by a diversified economy and emerging industries, fulfilling the long-term local autonomy and political aspirations of the Sarawak people.
Huang believes that this new policy by the Sarawak Alliance will not only change the development trajectory and destiny of Sarawak but will also have a demonstration effect on other states in Malaysia, and it is indeed happening.
