(Bandar Seri Begawan, 29th) – The Speaker of the National Assembly, Rahman, delivered a speech at the Parliament, expressing his high respect for His Majesty the Sultan.
He said that His Majesty's teachings have served as a guide for Parliament, especially when discussing strategic issues focusing on the people and national matters, providing us with profound insights.
The Speaker further pointed out that His Majesty's teachings have been clearly reflected in the atmosphere of the discussions during the session, which were full of creativity, decorum, and respect.
He also expressed his gratitude for the participation, support, and united cooperation of the members, as well as to the Parliament staff, related departments, and agencies for ensuring the smooth, orderly, and efficient completion of each session’s affairs.
The Speaker continued: “In this session, we have successfully approved four legislative items and discussed the budget bill for the 2026/2027 financial year. The session also heard statements from four Ministers and addressed 215 questions from various Ministers.”
“All of this took place during the month of Ramadan and continued into the blessed days.” the Speaker noted.
“It can be said that the situation of this year's session was different from previous years, and faced some challenges. I am aware that members and all participants have sacrificed their time, including Fridays and Sundays. However, this is the spirit of the nation – to work for the country and its people, wholeheartedly, loyally, and with a deep sense of responsibility.” the Speaker explained.
Indeed, working for the nation requires selfless sacrifice, a resilient mindset, and a strong fighting spirit to bear the entrusted mission. May every effort made be an act of devotion to Allah, and be rewarded doubly.
Next, the Speaker expressed his appreciation for the spirit of consultation, wisdom, and insight shown by the members in addressing issues during this session.
“To me, this is the best way – by listening to various perspectives and ideas (including those from the public), then discussing and assessing the interests of all sides, arriving at the best decisions and reaching consensus.” the Speaker emphasized.
Parliament also needs to continue maintaining the spirit of unity demonstrated during discussions on the national budget. This is because, whether we are civil servants or appointed legislators, our common goal is the well-being of the people and the prosperity of the nation.
The Speaker mentioned that as Parliament Speaker, he is privileged to listen to and observe the speaking styles of each member. For example, setting time limits was initially a challenge for members, some felt they couldn’t catch their breath, but now, everyone seems to have adapted and can speak fluently as before. He explained that the key lies in concise and powerful language, a straightforward way of expressing oneself.
“Moreover, the topics discussed must be based on facts and substantive content, that is, important issues deeply connected to the lives and concerns of the people.” the Speaker further emphasized that dialogues and discussions between members and government departments must continue, and this platform must be fully utilized even outside Parliament, especially to pay attention to the voices and genuine issues of the people.
Finally, the Speaker pointed out that members should continue to serve with high integrity, a sense of responsibility, and commitment to ensure all plans can be translated into tangible benefits for the people and the nation.
He also called on members to always pay attention to and understand the needs of the people, as this is their responsibility. As shown during the discussions of the Budget Committee, one of the main focuses is expanding employment opportunities, especially for youth, and strengthening SMEs as the driving force of the national economy.
“Members are also concerned about digital transformation and the delivery of government services.” the Speaker added.
Although there were differing opinions, the entire discussion took place in an atmosphere of order and mutual respect, which the Speaker emphasized must be maintained.
The Speaker also pointed out that many proposals and views should not merely remain as records of debate, but practical action and appropriate measures should be taken.
In conclusion, the Speaker reminded everyone that the world is currently full of uncertainty, and global power conflicts have made the situation more complex. We must cherish peace, but at the same time, not overlook the potential impact of world changes.
“Therefore, the country may need to take certain measures to face these challenges. I hope that despite the tests and challenges of the global situation, there will still be an opportunity to strengthen our capabilities.” The Speaker finally called on everyone to pray for His Majesty the Sultan, wishing him continued health, happiness, and continued leadership for the nation's prosperity.
“Therefore, this session will be temporarily adjourned, with the date to be announced.” the Speaker declared.
