(Kuala Belait, 29th) Mak Kin Ling Neighbourhood Committee Welfare Director Chua Zai Yun led committee members and resident volunteers this morning in a cleaning campaign at the Iban, Dusun, and Chinese cemeteries along the Sungai Ling coastline.
More than 70 enthusiastic participants from different ethnic backgrounds joined in, bringing their own grass cutters, herbicide sprayers, fish spears, and wood cutting machines. Together, they collaborated to clean up weeds around the cemeteries and trees by the roadside, in preparation for the upcoming Qingming Festival, making it easier for families and descendants to pay respects to their ancestors.
Due to limited resources from the organizers, participants brought their own food, drinks, and plastic trash bags.
Present at the event were Iban leader Bob Ankasan, Dusun leader, and committee members of the Sungai Ling Longevity Association.
Chua Zai Yun stated, “This cleaning campaign is not just a simple environmental clean-up, but also a transmission of community culture. Through our annual cemetery cleaning activities, we are not only facilitating ancestral worship during Qingming, but also subtly educating and inspiring the younger generation to uphold the tradition of honoring elders and ancestors. Such activities allow the younger generation to personally participate in the traditions of their elders, to feel the roots and value of their culture, and thus deepen their understanding of traditional rituals and ethnic cohesion.”
He added that during this event, the participants displayed collective cooperation and a sense of community responsibility. This spirit not only helps upgrade community harmony, but also symbolizes the respect for and inheritance from forebears. Through such joint efforts, not only are the cemeteries cleaned, but the seeds of culture are also allowed to take root in the new generation.
He continued, the cleaning campaign is not just to make the cemetery look new—it is also a cultural link, a reflection of shared goals among different ethnic groups, showing that while respecting tradition, everyone is also continually innovating and promoting communal progress. Through these collective actions, everyone not only maintains dignity and historical memory, but also creates a more harmonious living environment for the future.
