(Bandar Seri Begawan, 3rd) Recently, Brunei Chung Hwa Middle School Kindergarten held a unique English-Chinese bilingual poetry recitation event, which received enthusiastic participation from children in K1 to K3.
At the event, the kindergarten children held props and used their tender voices to perform English poems such as “Spring Is Here” and “You Are My Sunshine,” as well as classic Tang poems like “Spring Morning (春晓),” “Song of the Wanderer (游子吟),” “Fisherman’s Song (渔歌子),” and “Looking for Hermit Hu (寻胡隐君).” Through clear and resounding recitation, they experienced the charm of language and the blending of cultures.
This bilingual recitation activity is a highlight of the kindergarten's “Language Immersion Program”—the “Poetic Childhood” project. By comparing classic Tang poems with English nursery rhymes, the program aims to cultivate children's language sensitivity and cross-cultural understanding.
Shen Manling, the kindergarten’s assistant principal, introduced that from the K1 stage, the school offers special courses such as Tang poetry chanting and English nursery rhymes, nurturing children's language skills and cultural identity through fun and educational activities.
Principal Xu Yuelan of Wen Zhong stated that language is a bridge of culture, and they hope children will appreciate the beauty of both Chinese and English from an early age, building cultural confidence and an open mindset through the richness of poetry.
To make learning more interesting, the kindergarten teaching team integrated poetry teaching with various art forms such as painting and music. For example, children first understood the artistic conception of “Ode to the Goose (咏鹅)” through ink painting, and then adapted the English nursery rhyme “I Had A Little Turtle” into a song and dance performance. In this way, they both appreciated the profundity of Chinese culture and experienced the resonance generated by the meeting of East and West.
