Malaysia Ranks 15th Globally in Competitiveness, Hits Record High - Nga Kor Ming: Reforms Show Results and Surpass Developed Economies

Malaysia's Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said that Malaysia's ranking in global competitiveness has seen a significant leap for two consecutive years, demonstrating the country’s stable progress and that the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar is gradually seeing results.

"Under Prime Minister Anwar's leadership, Malaysia’s progress in recent years is clear for all to see: in 2024 we ranked 34th, in 2025 we jumped to 23rd—a remarkable improvement of 11 places; this year we climbed even further to 15th in the world, reaching a record high."

The International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland, yesterday released the "2026 World Competitiveness Ranking," with Malaysia rising 8 spots among 70 global economies to reach 15th place.

In a statement today (19th), Nga Kor Ming said this marks Malaysia’s best result ever, overtaking developed countries such as the UK, South Korea, Japan, Norway, and Australia in one fell swoop.

"The data shows Malaysia’s performance in price competitiveness is especially outstanding, ranking 2nd globally, second only to one country—demonstrating the relative advantages in Malaysia’s cost of living and business operation costs."

"Malaysia’s ranking in international trade has climbed to 5th globally, domestic economy to 11th, and labor market to 3rd—comprehensively proving that the reforms in Malaysia over the past few years are gradually bearing fruit."
