KUCHING, 15 July: A group of 10 Child Council members from the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has departed for Chengdu, China, to participate in the Panda Chengdu – Chinese Education Study Camp, taking place from July 14 to 20.
The delegation, accompanied by two senior MBKS officers, will represent Kuching South in this international educational and cultural exchange programme.
A brief send-off ceremony was held at MBKS headquarters, where Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, officially presented the Sarawak flag to the young delegation.
“This is more than just a study trip, it is a platform to foster cross-cultural understanding, build international friendships, and develop your confidence and leadership,” said Wee.
“It aligns closely with our ongoing efforts under the Child-Friendly Cities Initiatives to nurture globally aware and socially responsible youth.”
The invitation to take part in the Chengdu camp came about following a diplomatic engagement earlier this year, when a delegation from Xindu District, Chengdu paid a courtesy call on Wee on April 29.
During the meeting, he expressed interest in including MBKS Child Council members in the camp and requested 10 seats be allocated for Kuching South.
The Xindu delegation responded positively, resulting in the formal invitation extended to MBKS with support from the Sichuan Provincial Government.
Participants of the Panda Chengdu Study Camp will experience immersive learning in Chinese language, culture, and educational practices, alongside interactions with youth from other cities and countries.
The programme aims to broaden the participants’ perspectives, promoting international friendship and cultural understanding.
The MBKS Child Council, established under MBKS’ inclusive governance framework, continues to serve as a platform for young voices to be heard and supported.
