(Kuching, 30th) The Sarawak branch of the Scouts Association of Malaysia will undergo reconstruction and be equipped with improved facilities to promote the development of the younger generation in Sarawak.

Sarawak Premier and Sarawak State Chief Scout Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that the project is expected to cost RM20 million, and is not just the construction of a new building, but also intended to create an ecosystem and social support system for the youth.

According to him, the current headquarters building, known as the Tun Openg Building, will be equipped with new facilities, including dormitories with hotel-like amenities for scout members from across Sarawak, as well as an exhibition hall dedicated to displaying the history of the scout movement in Sarawak.

“I hope we can provide the necessary ecosystem and social support for the future of young people. This building will become one of the pillars of the social support system, allowing the scout movement to continue educating youth from a discipline perspective, regardless of their social background.”

Abang Johari made these remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sarawak branch headquarters of the Scouts Association of Malaysia, held today in Batu Lintang.

He pointed out that this building also symbolizes the spirit of cooperation, as it not only provides accommodation facilities, but also offers young people a platform to discuss the future, including the direction of the scout movement and community development in Sarawak.

Regarding funding, he suggested increasing the allocation based on the original RM20 million, as additional items were included in the design and the cost of building materials has risen.

However, as the State Chief Scout of Sarawak, he said that no additional funding has been announced yet, as opinions from the architects are still required.

In addition, the Sarawak branch headquarters building of the Scouts Association of Malaysia was almost completely destroyed in a fire on February 6, 2024.
