(Kuala Lumpur, 29th) The government, through the Ministry of Communications, is formulating various initiatives to assist Malaysian media professionals in facing current challenges, including threats brought by artificial intelligence (AI) technology and uncertainties in the economic outlook.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi pointed out that this year's National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) is being held in an atmosphere where most media workers feel worried about their careers and future prospects.
In his message in conjunction with the 2026 HAWANA today, he said: “This year, we are celebrating Journalists' Day in such an atmosphere, where many people may be concerned about their careers and futures due to AI and economic issues.
“However, God willing, the government—especially the Ministry of Communications—is working to roll out several measures to help media colleagues.”
Additionally, Fahmi pointed out that a free and ethical media is an important pillar of the country's democratic system.
“A free media and media with ethical conduct are extremely important—not only for our country's democracy, but also for Malaysia's future.”
With the theme “Integrity in Media, Foundation of Trust,” the 2026 HAWANA summit will be held on June 20 at the Penang International Commercial City Arena (PICCA), with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar invited to officiate the opening.
It is expected that about 1,000 media practitioners from home and abroad will gather at the event, making it a strategic platform to spark new thinking and discuss the current direction of journalism development.
National Journalists' Day, which falls on May 29 each year, is meant to commemorate the first issue of the Malay Mail published on May 29, 1939, and to thank media practitioners and veteran journalists for their contributions to the nation and the people's development.
Organized by the Ministry of Communications and executed by Bernama, HAWANA is the highest platform to recognize the hard work and professionalism of Malaysian media practitioners.
