Local Man Involved in Multiple Customs Violations Fined $363,000 and Sentenced to 36 Months’ Imprisonment

(Bandar Seri Begawan, 17th) A 31-year-old local man has admitted to multiple customs violations, including the illegal possession of cigarettes, vaping products, and alcoholic beverages, and has been sentenced to a total fine of $363,000.

The Royal Customs and Excise Department stated that the accused, Muhammad Safwan, was arrested by law enforcement officers at two different locations at 4:47 PM on February 15, 2025, namely at a residence at the Tanah Jambu Royal Navy Base and another residence in Kampong Menglait.

During the operation, officers seized 405 cartons and 151 packs of various brands of cigarettes, 68 vapes and 53 vaping accessories, as well as 204 cans and 52 bottles of alcoholic beverages.

On April 14, 2026, the accused was charged before a judge with five counts of violating Section 146(1)(d) of the Excise Order 2006, namely possession of controlled goods without a valid license.

The accused pleaded guilty to all charges, and on April 16 was sentenced to a fine of $363,000, or alternatively, 36 months’ imprisonment in default of payment.

All seized items have been confiscated in accordance with the law.
