Curtin Malaysia students gain field experience in flood mitigation
and advanced riverbank stabilisation works

Miri, Sarawak – 17 May 2025 – Future civil engineers from Curtin University Malaysia
(Curtin Malaysia) 科廷大学got an up-close look at major flood mitigation efforts in action

during a
recent field visit to the Miri River Flood Mitigation Project (Phase 1), a critical

infrastructure
initiative aimed at strengthening the riverbanks and reducing flood risks in Miri.
The visit, part of Curtin Malaysia’s ongoing collaboration with the Drainage and Irrigation
Department (DID) Miri, gave students from its Geotechnical Design and Construction and
Construction Plant and Equipment courses invaluable exposure to real-world engineering
practices.
Led by Associate Professor Wong Kwong Soon and lecturer Praveena Munianday of Curtin
Malaysia’s Department of Civil and Construction Engineering, the group was hosted by civil
engineer Pettruss Gudam Anak Ambun from DID Miri. They toured the project site where
key flood control measures, including sheet pile walls and reinforced concrete piles, are
being implemented to prevent riverbank erosion and safeguard surrounding communities.
Throughout the visit, students observed construction machinery in action, witnessed welding
and piling techniques, and learned about the engineering challenges faced by on-site teams.
Pettruss provided expert insights into the project's technical requirements, the importance

of
geotechnical precision, and the role of modern construction equipment in ensuring long-term
stability.
“Nothing compares to seeing what we learn in the classroom applied in the field,” said
Associate Professor Wong. “These experiences prepare our students to navigate the
complexities of real infrastructure projects and appreciate the importance of safety,
teamwork, and innovation.”
Echoing Associate Professor Wong’s sentiments, Praveena said that such site visits
deepen students' understanding and confidence. “This is how we build job-ready graduates,
by immersing them in the realities of civil engineering work.”
The visit highlights Curtin Malaysia’s strong focus on industry-integrated learning and
community-focused partnerships. By working closely with organisations like DID Miri, Curtin
Malaysia continues to nurture future engineers who are not only technically proficient but
also committed to sustainable and resilient development in Sarawak and beyond.
