Man Fined $14,400 for Violating Excise Tax Laws, Convicted for Possessing Cigarettes and Cash

(Bandar Seri Begawan, 17th) — Possessing six cartons totaling 121 packs of various cigarettes and $317 in cash, a local man was recently fined $14,400 by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate’s Court. If he fails to pay the full fine, it will be substituted with 14 months’ imprisonment.

The defendant, Ali (45), was convicted under Section 146(1)(d) of the Excise Tax Order 2006, leading to the above sentence.

According to the case details, on January 23, 2025, at 9:54 a.m., the defendant was arrested by officers from the Royal Customs and Excise Department in a residence in the Mengkubau National Housing Scheme area.

All items involved in the case, including the cigarettes and the total cash amounting to $317, have been confiscated and handed over to the government for further processing.
