(Sibu, 19th) The Sibu International Dance Festival (SIDF) is not only a major artistic event for local residents but also an international platform that connects the world and unites diverse cultures.
Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Liu Qiangyan, stated that the festival uses 'dance'—the common language of the world—as a bridge to unite the cultures and emotions of people from various countries.
“SIDF is not merely a stage for artistic performance. It is also a platform for artists from around the world to exchange experiences, learn from each other, and strengthen the spirit of unity through cultural exchange.
“On this stage, physical movements are more powerful than words; melodies break through differences; dance can touch the soul and transcend the boundaries of language and race.” She said this when she officiated the launching ceremony for the 2025 Sibu International Dance Festival here the night before.
The 2025 Sibu International Dance Festival is organized by Hornland Dance Theatre (HDT) with support from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, and will be held from September 16 to 20.
The festival's prelude performances will take place on September 13 and 14 at three landmark venues: Sibu Rajang Esplanade Park, Sibu Central Market, and RH Hotel.
Lanang MP Liu Qiangyan also expressed her gratitude to HDT for their 30 years of contributions to the promotion of local dance arts and arts education.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Chen Ing Kuan, HDT has nurtured countless outstanding dancers and has represented Malaysia on the international stage many times.
“Their efforts prove that dance requires not only technique but is also a medium for expressing emotions, thoughts, and human values. We must give the highest recognition to the entire HDT team, including dancers, artists, backstage personnel, organizers, and sponsors; it is their joint efforts that have accomplished this grand event.
“May art continue to be our shared language, making the world even more beautiful.” she said.
Meanwhile, Sibu Municipal Council (MPS) Vice Chairman, Councillor Mohamad Abdullah Izkandar Rosli, stated that SIDF is the best example showing that Sibu is capable of hosting international-scale events, successfully bringing together local creativity and international talent.
He said that since its inception, SIDF has grown rapidly, not only showcasing the beauty of traditional culture but also highlighting modern creativity and innovative expression.
“We already witnessed this capability at the recent Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF). The team that served as stage directors at that time amazed Deputy Minister Dato Snowdan Lawan with the performance level and creativity.” he said.
He added that HDT's persistence over thirty years has secured Sibu a place on the regional and international performing arts map, attracting many tourists and art enthusiasts to visit.
“Their tireless efforts have not only nurtured local talent but have also made Sibu an increasingly prominent cultural destination.” he said.
