(Kuching, 21st) Kuching Water Board (KWB) has released the latest progress announcement regarding the 1400mm main water pipe leak at the junction of Highfield Industrial Area to Batu Kawa Road.
According to the Water Board statement, a comprehensive on-site assessment has been completed, including detailed mapping of the pipeline route and locating key underground facilities.
This critical water pipe has been in operation for over 30 years, delivering approximately 170 million liters of treated water per day, accounting for 20% of Kuching's total daily treated water production of 778 million liters.
"Regions relying on this pipeline for water supply include Matang Jaya, Petra Jaya, Demak Laut, Samariang, and communities and surrounding areas within the Regional Water Board (JBALB) jurisdiction."
Initial repair work started on April 18, but due to a mismatch between supply materials and old infrastructure, repairs were forced to pause.
To avoid further delays, the Water Board has taken proactive measures by commissioning the local manufacturing of required parts, thereby shortening wait times and avoiding reliance on delivery cycles from Peninsular Malaysia.
The necessary materials are now ready, and the second round of repair work is scheduled to start on May 23 at 9 PM, with completion expected by 7 AM on May 24.
Users in the following areas may experience reduced water pressure or water supply interruptions:
Matang Road (from Kubah Ria to Matang Road Ninth Mile), Taman Sri Harmoni, Jalan Sungai Tengah, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub, Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhamad Salahudin, Jalan Demak, Jalan Bako, Muara Tebas, Petra Jaya surrounding areas, and areas under the jurisdiction of JBALB.
To mitigate the impact of the water supply interruption, KWB will dispatch water trucks to provide temporary water supplies to the affected areas. Users are advised to store enough water in advance to cope with this supply interruption.
