The Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passed the "2025 Trade Union (Amendment) Bill" on Thursday (June 25), strengthening the safeguarding of national security.
According to the Hong Kong government website, the bill strengthens the statutory powers of the Registrar of Trade Unions to supervise and manage trade unions, enabling more effective fulfillment of responsibilities to safeguard national security. The amendment also takes into account the freedom and rights of Hong Kong residents to organize and participate in trade unions, and will not have a negative impact on the operation of lawful and compliant trade unions.
The Hong Kong government stated that the amended Trade Union Ordinance ensures that trade unions uphold the primary aim of safeguarding and promoting the occupational interests of their members, which will be conducive to the healthy development of trade unions.
The "2025 Trade Union (Amendment) Ordinance" will be gazetted on July 4 this year and implemented on January 5 next year.
