Indian police reported that a 33-year-old man in Maharashtra brutally used a chainsaw to slit the throat of his 9-year-old daughter on the spot after discovering she had secretly altered her report card ranking. To cover up his crime, he set his house on fire, staging the scene as an accidental blaze, but was ultimately detected and arrested by police.
According to the 'Indian Express' and 'NDTV', the case happened in Deulgaon Raja village in the central city of Pune, Maharashtra.
The report stated that the 33-year-old suspect, Shawan, lived together with his partner, Bhonsle. Before the incident, Shawan’s third-grade daughter, unwilling to endure ridicule from her fourth-grade stepbrother who had taken the top spot in class, secretly altered both of their report cards — putting herself in first place and changing her brother to second place.
Upon finding out his daughter had lied and forged the grades, Shawan flew into a rage and on the evening of the 4th, used a chainsaw meant for cutting wood to cruelly slit his daughter's throat, causing her death on the spot.
After killing his daughter, Shawan immediately started to destroy the evidence. He first wrapped his daughter's corpse in a traditional Indian attire called “sari”, then set his house on fire, attempting to make it look like the victim was trapped and died in an accidental blaze. After the crime, Shawan even cried out to neighbors at the scene, claiming it was an accident.
When police arrived at the scene to investigate, they found many suspicious points about the fire and ultimately uncovered the case, quickly arresting Shawan and Bhonsle. Bhonsle was charged with helping destroy evidence and deliberately concealing the truth.
Police found parts of the badly burned body in the charred ruins, and due to the extent of the damage, the remains have been sent to the hospital for identification tests.
It is reported that police are further investigating whether Shawan and the victim are biologically related, as well as the details of his psychological motives for the crime.
