(Miri, 23rd) A total of 25 personnel from Sarawak's Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB Sarawak) recently participated in a professional workshop on the principles of flow metering and greenhouse gas data verification.
This three-day course (April 15 to 17) was held at Miri Marriott Resort & Spa and organized by Dreamcatcher Consulting, aiming to enhance participants' understanding of emissions data processing workflows in oil and gas operational environments.
Deputy Director of Environmental Quality (Management), Kenny Poon, emphasized the importance of data integrity, pointing out that reliable emission reporting must be founded on rigorous data recordkeeping and verified information and logs.
He said, "When necessary, on-site inspections of actual facilities are still required to ensure that reported emissions data are accurate, transparent, and in line with regulatory requirements under the established environmental compliance framework."

The workshop focused on how emission data are generated, measured, reviewed, verified, and checked, with explanations specifically tailored to real oil and gas operational environments and reporting requirements.
Among the topics, flow measurement was identified as one of the most critical sources of activity data in emission calculations, including flaring and fuel gas consumption in various industrial processes.
Participants also learned about flow meter accuracy, correct usage and the importance of regular calibration, as well as mastering methods for calculating CO2-equivalent emissions based on collected operational data.

The course also included a practical component to guide participants in auditing carbon emissions reports, identifying discrepancies such as under- or over-reporting, further improving the reliability and completeness of the data.
The technical training segment covered the evaluation of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), involving flare systems, gas dehydration, gas compression and separation systems, to enhance participants' ability to conduct on-site inspections.
This training was conducted in conjunction with the implementation of the Environmental (Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions) Regulations 2023, strengthening requirements for accurate carbon emissions reporting and supporting Sarawak's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
