(Selama, 23rd) A 14-year-old boy is suspected to have drowned and died while playing in the Sungai Staat at Kampung Sekupang yesterday (April 22). His body was later found.
The deceased was a secondary school student from Simpang Empat. At about 2:40 pm that afternoon, he went to bathe in the river with five friends and suddenly went missing.
Selama District Police Chief Mohamad Haid said that after the boy's companions noticed his disappearance, they tried to search for him themselves but were unsuccessful, and later sought help from nearby villagers.
After receiving a report, the police dispatched personnel to the scene. The location of the incident could only be reached by walking about 350 meters from the end of the village through a forested area.
Fire and rescue personnel and villagers had already begun a search in the river before the police arrived.
“In the end, a villager found the deceased at a riverbed about 8 feet deep.”
“Medical personnel confirmed his death at the scene, and the body was subsequently sent to Selama Hospital for autopsy,” he said.
Mohamad Haid stated that the case has been classified as a sudden death.
