(Kapit, 23rd) With Alexander Nanta Linggi hinting that his political secretary, Datuk Alvin Runggah Jimbun, is likely to succeed him as Kapit Member of Parliament, speculation has arisen that this veteran PBB leader may be preparing to move into the state-level political arena.
Nanta recently revealed that his current political secretary, Alvin, is being groomed as a potential successor for the Kapit parliamentary seat, a statement that has fueled discussion about a possible leadership transition before the next election cycle.
This move has also sparked heated debate among political circles. Should the plan to increase 17 Sarawak state assembly seats be approved by Parliament, Nanta might instead contest one of the proposed new state seats in Kapit.
Sources pointed out that among the constituencies suggested in the latest delineation proposal, one of the planned constituencies is "Melekun" (DUN Melekun), intended to be included within the Kapit area.
If Nanta switches to contest in the state assembly, he could be poised to hold a higher position in the Sarawak Cabinet, or even be appointed Deputy Premier should a vacancy arise, especially after the anticipated retirement of current Deputy Premier Douglas.
If this arrangement materializes, it would restore the region's representation at the Deputy Premier level. Previously, this position was held by the late Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, who was then the Baleh state assemblyman.
Since 1999, Nanta has served as Kapit Member of Parliament and is currently also Malaysia’s Minister of Works, as well as the Secretary-General for PBB and Gabungan Parti Sarawak. He is one of Kapit's most senior political figures.
Although it has not been officially confirmed whether he will contest for a state assembly seat, his hint that Alvin would succeed him in Kapit has further heightened expectations of a power handover before the next election.
