MIRI, Sept 3: A late-night fire razed 80 per cent of a two-storey semi-permanent church building in Bakas, Sibuti, but its sole occupant escaped unharmed.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the emergency call was received at 11.52pm on Tuesday (Sept 2).
Firefighters from Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Batu Niah), led by Operation Commander PBK II Awang Azdwan Awang Sahari, were deployed to the scene with six personnel and one fire rescue tender (FRT).
Upon arrival, the operation commander reported that the blaze involved a church structure measuring 40 by 20 square feet, which had already been engulfed in flames up to 80 per cent.
Firefighters conducted extinguishing works using one hose line and two nozzles, drawing water from an open source.
The operation was declared fully under control at 2.33am.
Fortunately, there were no injuries or casualties reported. The church was only occupied by a pastor at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire and the estimated losses are still under investigation.
