Malaysia and China urge all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could complicate or escalate tensions in the South China Sea. They agree that the involvement of non-directly related parties may be counterproductive.
According to the joint statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both countries emphasize the importance of maintaining peace, security, and stability in the South China Sea. They agree to resolve disputes peacefully through friendly consultations and negotiations, in accordance with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
"Malaysia and China will work with other ASEAN countries to fully and effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), accelerate the completion of a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC) with substantial and effective contents by 2026, and strive to make the South China Sea a sea of peace, friendship, and prosperity."
The two countries consider maritime cooperation an important part of the Malaysia-China comprehensive strategic partnership. They highly appreciate the progress made in the formal launch of the bilateral dialogue on maritime issues and look forward to close communication and coordination to create more highlights in maritime cooperation.
The two countries will deepen cooperation opportunities in the field of marine science and technology and continue discussions on the renewal and signing of agreements to further enhance the level of cooperation.
