Pop diva Jolin Tsai has taken on the role of ambassador for Starlux Airlines and has even rearranged and re-recorded her classic song “Prague Square,” originally featured on her 2003 album “Magic.” The new MV was actually shot on location in Prague, completing an unfulfilled wish from back then. Interestingly, when Jolin Tsai finally arrived at Prague Square, she discovered that the wishing fountain referenced in the lyrics doesn’t actually exist in the Old Town Square—because lyricist Vincent Fang had simply imagined it when writing the song, leading to a beautiful misunderstanding. Fans are now laughing and exclaiming: “Vincent Fang has fooled us for 23 years!”
“Prague Square” was written by Vincent Fang, composed by Jay Chou, and sung by Jolin Tsai. Back then, due to budget limitations, the original MV was filmed on a set in Songshan, Taipei rather than on location in Prague. The wishing fountain described in the lyrics is also not real, as Vincent Fang hadn’t actually been to the Czech Republic when he wrote the song. Parts of the lyrics were simply his imagined depiction of the romantic atmosphere there.
However, the song has remained popular in Taiwan for many years. The catchy lyrics and melody led many people—who hadn’t been to the Czech Republic—to genuinely believe there was a wishing fountain in Prague Square. Now that the truth is out, netizens are once again laughing and saying, “Vincent Fang has fooled us for 23 years!” In reality, there is a true wishing fountain inside Prague Castle, where you can indeed toss a coin into a fountain.
Though the lyrics contain this beautiful misunderstanding, it hasn’t affected people’s love for the song. Fans have left comments such as: “Art doesn’t have to be realistic anyway,” “At least it gave us something to long for and be curious about; even if there’s a gap between the song and the real place when you finally visit, the journey itself leaves wonderful memories,” and “I really liked ‘Prague Square’ when I first heard it. In the end, I really did travel there.”
