The United States has praised Malaysia’s leadership this year as the rotating chair of ASEAN, describing Malaysia as playing a “strong and efficient” role in driving regional cooperation in key areas.
U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan also expressed optimism that the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings, officially kicking off this Sunday, would be highly successful.
He said: “Malaysia is, as we expected, a strong and efficient rotating chair of ASEAN. I had the privilege of being present when Malaysia held the ASEAN chairmanship in 2015 and 2005; each time we witnessed Malaysia’s outstanding capabilities, and I believe this year is no different.”
“We are very pleased to carry out close cooperation in several key areas, including the digital sector, because Malaysia has continuously advanced related work during its chairmanship.”
Kagan made these remarks to the media today (23rd) during the U.S.-Malaysia Digital Dialogue.
Mentioning U.S. President Trump’s arrival in Malaysia this Sunday to attend the ASEAN Summit, Kagan said that this visit reflects the U.S. government’s recognition of the significance of Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.
“This is highly significant. This will be the President’s first visit to Asia during his second term, and the first stop is Malaysia—this is a key signal.”
“Therefore, we look forward to conducting productive discussions and exchanges.”
