(Taipei, 8th) A Thai woman was paid 35,000 Thai Baht (approximately 4500 Ringgit) to carry approximately 11 kilograms of marijuana from Bangkok Airport to Taiwan. She was arrested at Taoyuan Airport and has now been sentenced to 2 years and 10 months in prison.
According to the Liberty Times report on the 7th, the Thai woman, Wichain, carried approximately 11 kilograms of the second-class drug marijuana to Taiwan from Bangkok Airport early in the morning of October 5th last year. She was caught at Taoyuan Airport by aviation police and customs officers on the spot. The police subsequently arrested a 36-year-old Taiwanese man, surnamed Su, who was the local contact. The Taoyuan District Court ruling revealed that Ms. Wichain confessed to her crimes, showing a relatively good attitude, and she was not the mastermind behind the plan, thus receiving a lighter sentence of 2 years and 10 months. However, Mr. Su, despite denying the charges, was determined by the judge to be an essential part of the criminal group, receiving a sentence of 13 years in prison.
Investigations by the prosecutors and police revealed that Mr. Su was in contact with a drug trafficking group and had commissioned Ms. Wichain to carry drugs to Taiwan for 35,000 Thai Baht on October 5th last year. Customs and aviation police noticed anomalies during her entry and seized the drugs. To unearth the local drug owner, police ambushed the hotel where Ms. Wichain was going to stay and arrested Mr. Su.
Although Mr. Su denies smuggling marijuana into the country, the judge discovered that Mr. Su was very knowledgeable about the method of transporting the drugs, the time the drugs arrived in Taiwan, and the contact channels for obtaining these drugs, making him a very important accomplice in the overall crime. Given the potential significant harm of the approximately 11 kilograms of marijuana, and Mr. Su's continuous denial post-arrest, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
