(U.S., 13th) The Trump administration has indicated its willingness to reach an agreement with China to ease new trade tensions, but at the same time warned that Beijing's recently announced export control measures are a main obstacle to negotiations.
According to Bloomberg, U.S. Vice President Vance said in an interview with Fox News on Sunday (October 12) that he urges Beijing to 'choose the rational path' in the escalating trade dispute.
He stated that if the dispute continues, President Trump holds more leverage.
Vance said: 'This is a game that must be handled carefully, and it depends largely on how China responds. If they respond in an extremely aggressive way, I guarantee that the U.S. president has more leverage than the People's Republic of China. But if they choose to remain rational, so will the United States.'
Trump later posted on social media, implying that he offered Chinese President Xi Jinping a way to solve the issue, while also issuing a veiled threat, saying a full-blown trade war would hurt China.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: 'Don’t worry China, everything will be fine! The highly respected President Xi is just in a bad mood. He doesn’t want his country to fall into an economic recession, and neither do I. The United States wants to help China, not hurt it!!!'
