Ann Hui Moves Into 'Luxury Elderly Residence'; Still Unmarried, Objects to Being Called Miserable

78-year-old renowned Hong Kong director Ann Hui recently appeared on veteran media personality Wong Man-ling's YouTube program, discussing her recent life. She shared her health status and her feelings about moving into a 'Luxury Elderly Residence' under the Housing Society.
Ann Hui said that at first, she was reluctant to move in: “Because I felt like everyone inside was already in their seventies or eighties. Of course, I am too, but I didn’t want to be influenced by that. But after moving in, I actually felt very encouraged.”
Ann Hui purchased a unit in the 'Luxury Elderly Residence' and moved in two years ago. She revealed that the unit is 600 square feet, with two bedrooms and a living room. What makes her happiest is being able to enjoy her own private space and not having to force herself to interact with other elderly residents. Ann Hui had always lived with her mother, and as she grew older she also hoped to have someone to look after her, so she moved into the 'Luxury Elderly Residence'. She is very satisfied with the staff’s attitude: “The staff are very well educated, they’re very professional and don’t treat you like just an old person, constantly telling you to be careful when walking. They don’t do that, but actually, they take great care of you. For example, if something needs repairing, they’ll come immediately when you call, and they charge very little. They’re very polite.” Ann Hui said every morning she sees some residents around her age going to the gym on time to exercise, and she finds it impressive.
Ann Hui has won countless awards in the film industry and has worked with many superstars. In 2020, she received the “Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement” at the 77th Venice International Film Festival, becoming the first female director in the world to receive this honor and bringing pride to Hong Kong on the international stage.
She has never married and has no children, devoting her entire life to film. She once expressed that she finds filmmaking more important than starting a family. However, some people think that being unmarried is automatically miserable. She objects to this view: “I’m a bit offended! Because I don’t think it’s miserable at all—there are lots of people who never marry! Lots of people get divorced! Why does everyone insist that I’m miserable?”
