Once Dated a Business Tycoon and Helped Pay Off His Debts, Carman Lee: 'I Don’t Want to Meet Another Liar'

58-year-old Carman Lee recently filmed the Chinese program Magical Friends alongside Eric Tsang. During the show, Carman spoke about agreeing to make her comeback because of Eric Tsang and candidly admitted that she once thought she had met her Mr. Right, saying: “I don’t want to meet another liar!”
In fact, Carman Lee once faded from the limelight at the peak of her career for love. In 1998, she started dating business tycoon Kwok Ying Chuen, who was 20 years her senior. Because he didn’t want her to keep acting, she decided to retire and withdraw from showbiz.
After starting her relationship with Kwok Ying Chuen, Carman remained devoted for many years, sticking by him even when, not long after dating, he faced bankruptcy and was in debt for hundreds of millions of Hong Kong dollars. Carman Lee didn’t abandon him, working hard to act and earn money to help him repay his debts. She even once said, “Whether rich or poor, I will never leave you.”
Although they never married, Carman Lee fulfilled her responsibilities as a partner, changing herself completely for him. In 10 years, she proposed marriage twice but was rejected each time; on the eighth year of dating, Kwok Ying Chuen insisted on breaking up, but a year later they reconciled. It wasn’t until their 10th year together—in 2008—that they finally broke up for good.
The heartbreak deeply affected Carman Lee, leading her to suffer from depression, and it took her five full years after the breakup to recover from the pain. When asked on the program why she didn’t get married, Carman said it was actually the best arrangement heaven made for her. She also revealed that her sister’s daughter now lives with her: “She’s not my daughter but she’s just like my daughter. She still lives with me. (How old?) 15 years old. She often says she has two mothers—you see how happy she is.”
