Enhancing Safe, Comfortable, and Convenient Travel – Miri Airport's New Escalators Officially In Service

(Miri, 22nd) After years of frequent breakdowns, the three old escalators at Miri Airport have been completely replaced with brand new equipment featuring higher safety standards. The new escalators will be formally put into service on October 17, 2025, providing passengers with a more convenient and comfortable travel experience.

According to a press statement issued by Chiew Tze Jian, Secretary to the Miri Member of Parliament and Information Chief of Parti Keadilan Rakyat Miri Branch, the replacement project was undertaken by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) through MASB Miri CAPEX 2025 funding, fully reflecting the Federal Government’s continued commitment to improving airport infrastructure in Sarawak.

The newly installed escalators have passed a comprehensive inspection and approval by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and are now officially open for public use. The new facilities are equipped with multiple safety features, including handrail LED lighting and direction indicator lights, further enhancing both safety and convenience for users.

Chiew Tze Jian stated that although this is not a large-scale project, it carries significant meaning for the people of Miri, especially the elderly, people with reduced mobility, and families traveling with young children. It demonstrates the Federal Government’s responsiveness to the voices of Sarawak’s citizens and its commitment to improving people's livelihood through practical actions.

He noted that, in addition to the escalator replacement, MASB Miri also received funding this year to upgrade the Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs) and refurbish four sets of toilets (male, female, and accessible toilets), ensuring passengers enjoy a more comfortable and inclusive airport environment.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Transport, Malaysia Airports Holdings, and all technical teams for their efficiency and professionalism, which made the completion of this urgently needed facility upgrade possible.

In addition, Chiew Tze Jian added that in the 2026 federal budget, the government has already announced an allocation of RM2.3 billion to upgrade facilities at multiple airports nationwide, including Miri Airport. The related works are expected to be completed by 2028, which will further improve Sarawak’s air connectivity and passenger experience.

"We look forward to seeing more similar infrastructure projects in Miri in the future, whether airports, roads, or public facilities, so that Sarawak’s development can advance in step with the rest of the country, achieving shared and equitable prosperity."
