Yang Kai Sheng Criticizes the Ministry of Education's Flag Image Mistake, Urges Suspension and Investigation, and Reevaluation of National Emblem Wearing Policy

(Miri, 25th) Regarding the Ministry of Education's hasty implementation of student wearing national emblems policy within less than a month, and the low-level error in the Malaysian flag illustrations that appeared in the SPM exam results analysis report, Yang Kai Sheng, a committee member of the Sarawak United People's Party Pujut Branch Youth League, expressed strong dissatisfaction today in Miri. He made four major demands: immediate suspension and investigation of all involved personnel, a comprehensive review of the official flag and emblem usage and verification process, and a reevaluation of the feasibility and rationality of the national emblem wearing policy.

1. Multiple Errors in Flag Illustrations in SPM Report, Numerous Loopholes in Verification Process

In the recently published 2025 SPM results analysis report, several AI-marked Malaysian flag illustrations appeared, with the blue rectangle covering more than half of the flag, resulting in severely distorted proportions. Some illustrations featured double crescents or lacked stars, and even the Pakistani flag was overlaid on the Malaysian flag, which is completely non-compliant with the standards.

Regarding the Ministry of Education's official apology and withdrawal of the report, Yang Kai Sheng stated: "If the most basic national flag symbol cannot be accurately presented, how can the Ministry of Education claim to be the guardian of national symbols? This exposes the lack of order in auditing AI images and official symbols."

2. Defending the Dignity of National Symbols

The Ministry of Education should immediately suspend and investigate all personnel involved in the design, verification, and publication of the report, and establish an independent investigation team to thoroughly investigate the root cause of the mistakes. In addition, they should comprehensively revise the standards for using flags and emblems, setting up a strict verification process for AI images and official symbols to ensure each official publication is error-free.

3. Hasty Execution of National Emblem Wearing Causes Disturbance and Waste

The Ministry of Education published the "School Uniform Wearing National Emblem Guide" on March 24, 2025, and suddenly enforced it on April 21, forcing parents and schools to comply within just four weeks, causing considerable inconvenience. As a result, due to limited supply, some areas, including Sarawak, were told to delay implementation. This exposed the Ministry's lack of wise decision-making considerations and execution capabilities.

Currently, the Ministry of Education, responsible for formulating policies for national future talents, has made such a low-level mistake. It seems that the ministry, eager to enhance national patriotism, has made an unacceptable error. Patriotic education should be integrated into classrooms and daily life, rather than relying solely on an emblem to genuinely foster students' national identity. Therefore, the Ministry of Education must reflect and explain to the citizens.

4. Respecting the Founding Agreement

Yang Kai Sheng believes that compared with implementing student national emblem wearing policy, the people of Sarawak are more concerned about whether the Federation treats Sarawak fairly. Therefore, if the government aims to increase Sarawak people's patriotic awareness, the federal cabinet should immediately pass a motion in the upcoming cabinet meeting to increase Sarawak and Sabah parliamentary seats to restore East Malaysia's one-third ratio. They should also restore all the powers granted to Sarawak in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), including autonomy over health, education, and natural resources management. This would absolutely enhance Sarawak people's patriotic sentiments more than wearing a national emblem.

Finally, Yang Kai Sheng stated that the Sarawak United People's Party Pujut Branch Youth League would join all Sarawak people in continuously supervising the Ministry of Education's subsequent rectification progress, defending the professionalism and credibility of education, and maintaining the seriousness of national symbols.
