Vietnam and Thailand have officially elevated their bilateral relations to the level of a "comprehensive strategic partnership", marking a new stage of cooperation in several key areas between the two nations.
According to Vietnamese official media reports, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha arrived in Hanoi on Friday, May 16th, for a two-day official visit. Following talks with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, the two sides jointly announced the relationship upgrade.
The Vietnamese government noted that Thailand is currently Vietnam's largest trading partner among ASEAN countries, with the total bilateral trade in 2023 exceeding $20 billion (approximately SGD 25.9 billion), while cumulative Thai investment in Vietnam has also surpassed $14 billion.
According to relevant documents reviewed by Reuters, Pham Minh Chinh and Prayut Chan-o-cha also witnessed the signing of several cooperation agreements covering trade, drug control, finance, education, and aviation.
The Vietnamese government added that both countries have set a common goal to raise bilateral trade to $25 billion annually by 2030.
