(Miri, 29th) In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Miri City, the Miri City Council will hold the "Miri City 20th Anniversary Car-Free Day" on May 3 (Saturday) from 7:30 am to 10:00 am at the Miri City Hall (Jalan Bandaraya) and Jalan Marina Utama.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang announced at a press conference with the organizing committee members in the meeting room on the 9th floor of the Miri City Council Building that the event aims to promote Miri as a low-carbon, healthy, and vibrant city, encouraging citizens to participate in activities like walking, running, cycling, and group exercises.

This year, the car-free day will use the new route in Marina City, replacing the former route on Jalan North Yu Seng, providing a longer and more scenic route to encourage more people to participate and practice green transportation methods.

Exciting activities include fun runs, fun rides, fun walks, Zumba, lucky draws (with generous prizes), traditional games (such as slipper throwing, rope skipping, Ketinting), parent-child games, street performances, and food and gardening product stalls. Sports demonstrations include taekwondo, tai chi, traditional archery, and pickleball. Health and awareness exhibits feature free health screenings (Miri Health Bureau), rabies awareness & dog license registration (City Council), public health exhibitions, fire safety exhibitions, National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) promotional booths, environmental exhibitions and recycling, as well as sports club registration booths. All participants will receive e-certificates and have a chance to win prizes in a lucky draw.

On the event day, partial road closures will be implemented along the route from the Miri City Council Building to Marina City from 7:00 am to 10:45 am.

Mayor Yii added that Miri City Council's new Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Task Force Chairman is Councillor Jamil Bujang. He emphasized that Car-Free Day is one of the important projects to promote sustainable development and encourage the use of public transportation. He encouraged citizens to switch to free bus rides to reduce the use of private cars. The City Council plans to hold Car-Free Day once every one to two months, eventually adjusting it to once every three months or six months to gradually cultivate a lifestyle of environmentally friendly travel.
