KUCHING, Aug 28: A special border pass is being proposed to ease cross-border travel between Sarawak and Brunei, benefitting people on both sides of the border.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that the matter was discussed during the 26th Malaysia-Brunei Annual Leaders’ Consultation (ALC) at Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya yesterday, which was co-chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.
“The governments of Malaysia and Brunei are negotiating to establish seamless travel.
“Among the proposals is a special pass valid for a certain period, for example two or three months, to facilitate travel for the people of Sarawak and Brunei,” he told reporters after officiating the Sheikh Othman International Conference in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) at the Sarawak Islamic Complex Hall here yesterday.
Abang Johari added that such a facility is crucial to strengthen social ties, trade and daily activities in border communities while boosting economic growth.
“This will certainly include Sabah as the state is also part of the equation,” he said.
Earlier this morning, Abang Johari arrived at the ALC around 10am to attend the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on healthcare cooperation between Malaysia and Brunei. He later joined a luncheon hosted by the Prime Minister.
Also present at the conference were Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, State Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU, and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, and Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) president Datuk Misnu Taha.
