Typhoon 'Taba' made landfall in Taishan City, Guangdong Province on Monday, and Hong Kong suspended classes for the entire day.
According to China Weather Network, monitoring by the Central Meteorological Observatory showed that the center of this year’s 16th typhoon, 'Taba,' made landfall along the coast of Taishan City, Guangdong Province at around 8:50 am on Monday (September 8) as a severe tropical storm. At landfall, the maximum wind force near the center was grade 11 (30 meters per second), and the minimum central pressure was 978 hPa.
To cope with Typhoon 'Taba,' the education authorities of Zhuhai, Yangjiang, and Yunfu in Guangdong have issued citywide school suspension notices, and some areas of Zhanjiang, Maoming, and Jiangmen have also suspended classes. All trains on the Shen-Zhan and Guang-Mao railways have been suspended.
After making landfall, the strength of 'Taba' will gradually weaken, but it will continue to bring strong winds and rain to the southern coastal areas of China. Today and tomorrow are expected to experience the most intense typhoon rainfall. The Central Meteorological Observatory predicts that from 8 am Monday to 8 am Tuesday (the 9th), heavy rain to rainstorm will occur in central and southern Guangdong and central and eastern Guangxi. In some areas of eastern Guangxi and southwestern Guangdong, there will be severe rainstorms, and in some localities, extremely heavy rain.
According to Hong Kong radio and online media outlet 'HK01,' affected by 'Taba,' Hong Kong suspended all classes for the entire day on Monday, and about 100 flights were canceled.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued the No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal at 9:20 pm on Sunday (the 7th), predicting that 'Taba' would pass within 200 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong on Monday morning and then make landfall in western Guangdong. The No. 8 signal is expected to be maintained at least until 11 am on Monday.
The Hong Kong Education Bureau issued an announcement on Monday suspending all day schools, including secondary schools, primary schools, special schools, kindergartens, and kindergarten-cum-child care centers. If the Hong Kong Observatory cancels the No. 8 tropical cyclone warning signal before 5 pm, unless notified otherwise, night schools will resume classes that evening.
Au Yeung Hin-wang, General Manager of Terminal and Passenger Experience of the Hong Kong Airport Authority, said operations are expected to be affected by the storm on Monday. As crosswinds began in the morning, at least nine flights were diverted within the past hour. The airport was expected to handle around 800 flights that day, with about 100 flights canceled and around 20,000 people affected.
Due to the impact of Typhoon 'Taba,' the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau issued the No. 8 signal at 9 pm on Sunday, predicting it would be maintained at least until 10 am on Monday. During the No. 8 or higher signal, all public transport services in Macau are suspended.
According to Sunday's projected path, 'Taba' would pass within about 150 kilometers southwest of Macau on Monday morning, with its strength further increasing. As 'Taba' approaches, winds in Macau will gradually intensify to force 8 to 9, with frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms.
